El Al ist die größte Fluggesellschaft Israels. Sie hat ihren Sitz und ihre Basis auf dem Flughafen Ben Gurion in Lod bei Tel Aviv. Der Ausdruck El Al "basiert auf einem Abschnitt im Buch des biblischen Propheten Hosea und bedeutet nach oben, zu Gott hin.  Das IATA-Kürzel LY leitet sich vom ehemaligen Namen der Stadt Lod (Lydda) ab, in deren Nähe sich der Ben-Gurion-Flughafen befindet. Aufgrund der ständigen Bedrohung durch Terroranschläge werden Flüge der El Al unter besonders strengen Sicherheitsvorkehrungen durchgeführt.
