Die große Bahn 14L / 32R wird für den Flugverkehr freigegeben.

Für den internationalen Luftverkehr mit Düsenmaschinen genügten die 2 bisherigen Startbahnen nicht mehr. Aus diesem Grunde wurde die Hauptstartbahn parallel zu der 1.800 m langen Startbahn mit einer Länge von 3.815 m und einer Breite von 60 m vom Staatsneubauamt-Flughäfen in Wahn geplant und gebaut

Nach der Fertigstellung der großen Startbahn 1961, fand der erste Langstreckenflug ab Köln/Bonn statt.

Anfang der 70iger Jahre befand sich am Ende vom heutigen T1 eine Flugzeugaustellung der Air Classic Collection.

Dazu gehörte auch eine Beech C18. Im Hintergrnd ist das Terminal zu sehen, das zu der Zeit noch überall zugänglich war.
